Stuff doesn’t get done without deadlines.
I find that, as a business owner, the larger the question is, the less urgency it has (ie. solving a client’s problem is something that can be done today, however, when you’re figuring out where you want the business to be in 5, 10, 15 years, you end up giving yourself more leniency to start that thought process tomorrow).
I end up having a lot of “big picture” conversations with a lot of business leaders. I enjoy asking people to make their ideas tangible by coming up with a structure that has logical steps.
I also enjoy when people turn the tables on me and do the same thing. I had a great conversation with someone a few weeks ago. He ended the conversation with: “Reading between the lines, it sounds like you need to figure it out in the next three months.”
He then followed that up at the end of the day with a calendar invite in October called: “What Will Chris Do?”
Accountability is a wonderful thing.
