The amount of risk I like to take is pretty dang close to zero.
However, I was at breakfast with one of my friends/mentors who runs a similar business to me here in Atlanta. We got onto the topic of how much risk we like taking in our respective businesses. I was bemoaning the fact that I’m more risk averse than he is and how I need to practice taking more logical risks to grow the business.
I’m paraphrasing, but he interrupted me and said:
Sir, you are an entrepreneur. You risk a ton every day. You have a team. Sure, you can say you may take less risks than a lot of others like you, but you can’t say you are a “1/10.” Changing your mindset to view yourself higher on that scale will improve your confidence across the board.
If you feel like you aren’t growing as quickly as you like, don’t let that turn into the wrong internal dialog.
Congratulations. You are an entrepreneur. By default, you take risks every day.
Cory Miller also wrote a good piece on this as well.
