How are you using the people on your team?

Over the years, I’ve seen a lot of founders not able to get out of the “creative genius” seat of the business. While that role isn’t easily defined on the org chart (or accountability chart), it assuredly exists. They are the person who comes in during the sales process, sells the story of the “best possible future state” for the client, and drives the creative thinking during the Discovery process. Once that is done, they bolt out and head to the next one.

Rinse and repeat.

Without that founder sitting in the “creative” seat, the company does not exist. There has been no one else in the company prepped to take over that creative thinking and strategy.

The book Multipliers talks about this phenomenon quite a lot. At the end of the day, as a creative leader, are you:

  1. Willing to ask questions and not show the answer all the time?
  2. Are you willing to let people fail?
  3. Are you able to tell someone: “This is yours to lead. Let me know what resources you need.”

The whiteboard should be the team’s to own. Make sure you give them the marker.

The mind of the Multiplier works like this: If I can find someone’s genius, I can put them to work
