Proximity

I was reading The Innovator’s Dilemma this past week.

The core topic in the first part of the book is “how close should you stay to your customers?” Yes, you should always be listening to your customers and modifying how you serve them (and your clientele at large) based on that feedback.

However, it puts your business into a highly reactive state. You’re always solving the closest problem. It’s like driving a car. You don’t focus on the road that is five feet in front of you.

You raise your eyesight up to look more into the horizon.

Because eventually, someone will be innovative and disrupt everything.

Sears and Macy’s were giants. They were doing everything their customers wanted them to do. Seth Godin talks at length about it, too.

Until Amazon came in and disrupted the industry.

What are you disrupting?
